The story of a young man representing 17-year-old teenagers with action thoughts and psychology of an adult.
The work uses profanity, depictions of depressive psychology, and sexual issues of adolescents. The protagonist of Catcher in the Rye PDF, Holden Caulfield, has become a symbol of the rebellion and challenge of American teenagers. But contrary to the criticism that this is a “lousy, cruel, damaging work”. adolescent spirit, ”the book is still imbued with humanity. Besides the turmoil, lousy, Holden is still a virtue. Holden befriends people who have no friends, who are abandoned; respectful and loyal, kind. As well as a noble, simple dream but noble: Holden tells Phoebe what he wants above all else in the world to “be a watchman for children in the barley field”. He imagined a vast field with thousands of children playing, surrounded by no other adult, except him. He stood at the edge of a steep cliff to keep watch over the children engrossed in play, Catching young green kids is a book worth reading and thinking about.
The story of Catcher in the Rye takes place in the days from the end of the fall term to Christmas, which begins on Saturday after finishing the semester at Pencey Prep College in Hagerstown, Pennsylvania. Pencey was Holden’s fourth school after he was expelled three times. At Pencey, Holden went on to fail 4 out of 5 subjects and was announced he would be expelled. Before returning home to Manhattan the following Wednesday, he visited Mr Spencer, the teacher of History, to say goodbye to the only teacher he had loved while at Pencey, however, Mr Spencer reprimands Holden’s results and annoys him.
Returning to the dormitory, Holden continues to be disturbed by his dirty friend Ackley and roommate Stradlater. Stradlater just went out with Jane Gallagher, an affectionate Holden girl. While recounting their date with Jane, Stradlater and Holden began to shout and fight, Holden was slammed to the floor by Stradlater and punched with a bloody nose. Fed up with all the Pencey related things, Holden packed up and left without waiting until Wednesday.
On the way to New YorkHolden meets the mother of one of his classmates in Pencey. Even though he thinks his classmate is a “bastard”, Holden tries to paint a good picture of his friend for his mother. When he got to Penn Station, Holden went to the phone booth, intending to call a few people, but ended up not calling anyone but got on the taxi driver Horwitz. In the car, he asked Horwitz annoying questions such as where the ducks in Central Park would go if the lakes froze. Eventually, the taxi stopped at the Edmont Hotel, Holden made a reservation and called Faith Cavendish, a nude dancer, to suggest she sell him sex at the hotel, Faith offered to reschedule the next day but Holden disagrees, he leaves the hotel.
Taking a taxi to the Jazz club in Greenwich Village, Holden asks again about where the ducks are in winter. Sitting in the club not long, he returned back to Edmont and after the suggestion of the elevator man, he asked this guy to call for a prostitute to come up to the room. When the prostitute “Sunny” arrives, Holden tries again and admits he doesn’t want to have sex. As a result, Sunny forced him to pay the full amount along with the threat of Maurice, the elevator hand, the two of them got Holden $ 5 after Marice gave Holden a few punches in the stomach.
The next morning Holden phoned Sally Hayes, his ex-girlfriend and asked her to go see the show. The two of them later went skating again at the Municipal Radio, Holden went mad again and made Sally go away. Meeting an old friend and getting drunk, Holden got excited about Central Park watching the ducks before sneaking home to meet Phoebe’s sister and then to the house of his old English teacher, Mr Antolini. Holden sleeps over at Mr Antolini’s house but wakes up suddenly when he strokes his head. Thinking that the teacher was going to do some trick, Holden left and slept at Central Station.
The next day Holden went to Phoebe’s school to make an appointment to see her, announcing that he had decided to run away from home. When Phoebe arrived at the meeting place, she brought her luggage with the intention of going with her brother. Holden angrily refuses to piss Phoebe and must make up by taking her out. The story ends with Holden watching his sister playfully, he doesn’t want to continue telling how he got home and sick, or what school his fifth school is.
