Of Mice And Men (1947)

“Of Mice and Men” is an American classic and for a good reason. It’s a short but extremely profound story that will stay with you long after the last page is turned. Through seemingly ordinary events and through the eyes of seemingly ordinary characters, Steinbeck weaves a story of George and Lennie, two workers who travel from one Californian farm to another against the backdrop of the Great Depression.

Only, the Depression isn’t the sole reason for their swift change of employers – Lennie keeps getting George in trouble, and eventually, George has to deal with the consequences of Lennie’s obsession with “petting things.” Themes of friendship, compassion, inward struggles and the ultimate choice between right and wrong are powerful throughout the narration. The old dog part nearly killed me – I don’t know if it’s at all possible to read it and remain indifferent. A must-read, plain and simple.

Of Mice and Men Book Review

This is a simple tale of friendship between two men travelling for work. Rather than being loners as many travelling labourers are, they have a bond in their friendship, they are able to talk about their dreams for the future and it gives them hope. George tries his best to keep Lennie out of trouble, but this is not always possible and misunderstandings do happen.
The story came together with such a crescendo that my heart nearly burst from my chest. I won’t spoil this for anyone who hasn’t read it, but the tale touched me so profoundly that I was left staring at the last page for ages before I could bring myself to close it.

Of Mice And Men Themes

In every bit of honest writing in the world there is a base theme. Try to understand men, if you understand each other you will be kind to each other. Knowing a man well never leads to hate and nearly always leads to love. There are shorter means, many of them. There is writing promoting social change, writing punishing injustice, writing in celebration of heroism, but always that base theme. Try to understand each other. — John Steinbeck
